John awoke with the sun streaming through the open curtains in the Ocean Pavillion. His head and muscles ached from the night before, although the cause of the latter had slipped away in the night. He could hear the television in the lounge, and surmised that Callum was awake. It was annoying how little sleep that man could survive on.

"Morning, mate," John hailed, as he came into the room still pulling on his clothes.

"Shush! Look at this."

John glanced at the television. Callum had found the BBC News Channel, and was watching a ‘breaking story’. A picture of John appeared, which changed to a correspondent standing outside his house in North Staffordshire. Both men listened in silence to his report.

"John Baverbrook was an experienced diver, working in the oil fields of the North Sea, and teaching at the local dive school here in Stoke during his spare time. Friends say he had gone to Egypt on a diving holiday. His neighbours were shocked to hear that he has become the prime suspect in a multiple murder enquiry, describing him as a fun guy who wouldn't hurt anyone. Police continue to comb the house he used to share with his ex-wife, Julie Mason, for clues as to his whereabouts."

"And that's the real mystery about this whole case, isn't it, Peter?" The studio-based news anchor prompted.

"That's right, Sarah. Julie Mason has told police that he was at her house last week, while he was apparently seen at a local pub with one of his close friends, Callum Jamieson, yesterday, just hours after supposedly evading officials at Marsa Alam airport in Egypt. Police have been unable to find Mr Jamieson for a statement and are at present baffled by these apparently contradictory accounts of Mr Baverbrook's movements. Peter Prendergast, BBC News, Newcastle, Staffordshire."

Both men sat in silence for a moment, as the anchor moved on to financial news. Callum was the first to speak.

"What the hell have you done?"

"What am I accused of?"

"They say you went diving in Lake Nasser, with two other people and a copper. They are both missing, presumed dead. The bloke you hired your boat from is also dead. They think you found something really valuable, and killed the others for it. It's these bloody rings, isn't it?"

"Did they say anything else?"

"Only that one of their father’s, along with a one-time girlfriend, have been arrested in Cairo, in possession of a priceless Egyptian artefact."

"Mahmoud's been arrested? Shit!"

Before Callum could press him further, the front door of the Ocean Pavillion clicked open, to reveal a chambermaid flanked by two hotel security guards. John and Callum looked at each other for a split second, before instinct took over and they flew through the patio doors that ran the length of the lounge and out into the hotel grounds. Holidaymakers scattered as the two men bounded down the path to the beach, with the guards in pursuit. A flight of steps appeared on their left, and John dragged his friend down them. They
